A Crimson Gem of the Highlands

Discover the Sulawesi Myzomela (Myzomela chloroptera)
If you are exploring the highlands of North Sulawesi, one bird is guaranteed to catch your eye: the Sulawesi Myzomela. This stunning endemic honeyeater is a favorite among photographers and birdwatchers alike, thanks to the male’s brilliant crimson-red plumage contrasted against sleek, black wings.
A Rare Highland Encounter In September 2017, I had the pleasure of guiding a guest through the cool, mist-covered forests where these birds thrive. We were fortunate enough to capture a clear shot of this small but vibrant bird as it moved quickly through the canopy searching for nectar.
While the Sulawesi Myzomela can be elusive, they are often found in the sub-montane forests of Mount Mahawu and other highland areas in North Sulawesi. Their small size and fast movements make them a challenge to photograph, but the reward is one of the most beautiful bird photos you can take in Indonesia.
Characteristics & Habitat The Sulawesi Myzomela (Myzomela chloroptera) is a true Sulawesi endemic. It is specifically adapted to the island’s unique ecosystems. Unlike the females, which are a more understated olive-brown, the males are unmistakable with their “shining” red feathers. Finding them requires a keen ear for their high-pitched calls and an experienced guide who knows their favorite flowering trees.
