The Best Spot for the Cinnabar Boobook

Birdwatching at Gunung Ambang
Located about 4 to 5 hours from Manado, Gunung Ambang Agriculture Nature Reserve is a premier destination for any birding trip to North Sulawesi. This montane forest offers a cool climate and a unique set of endemic birds that you won’t find in the lowland jungles of Tangkoko.
The Cinnabar Boobook
The main reason international birders visit Gunung Ambang is to see the Cinnabar Boobook (Ninox ios). This small, reddish-brown owl was only rediscovered in the late 1990s and remains one of the most sought-after species in Indonesia.
Recently, I accompanied Mr. Carlos on a trek into these highlands. We were incredibly successful, finding the Boobook at its usual roosting spot. Seeing this owl in the wild is a highlight for any life list!
Other Key Species at Gunung Ambang
While the owl is the main attraction, the secondary forest and highland edges are home to other incredible endemics:
-
Scaly-breasted Kingfisher (Actenoides princeps): A shy highland kingfisher that requires patience and a good guide to find.
-
Matinan Flycatcher: Another rare endemic restricted to the high forests.
-
Sombre Pigeon: Often heard calling from the canopy.
What to Expect on Your Visit
Birding at Gunung Ambang involves some trekking through vegetable gardens before entering the forest. The trails can be muddy and slippery, so good hiking boots are essential. Because of the altitude, it is much cooler here than in Bitung or Manado, so bring a light jacket.
If you want to see the Cinnabar Boobook and other North Sulawesi highland specialties, let me handle the logistics. I provide transport from Manado, expert guiding, and I know exactly where these rare birds hide.
